9 x 300m Workout in Paris: an Immersion into a Middle-Distance Training Session with the Off Track Club

Last month, we took part in a track and field session with the Off Track club in Paris. Around forty participants gathered for a middle-distance oriented session, structured around 300-meter repetitions.

Off Track brings together runners of various levels each week for structured and accessible sessions.

The goal wasn't to run as fast as possible, but to maintain a consistent pace throughout all repetitions, managing effort from start to finish.

A Session Structured Around Progressive Warm-up and Repetition Work

The session began with a comprehensive warm-up aimed at gradually preparing the body for intensity.

It started with a simple warm-up including about 5 minutes of jogging, followed by dynamic exercises: backward running, knee raises, leg swings, then a coordination ladder drill. The work then shifted to cone drills with progressive spacing to work on stride, reactivity, and foot placement.

This preparation allowed for a gradual entry into intensity without an abrupt transition between the warm-up and the main session.

The core of the session then consisted of 300-meter repetitions organized into 3 blocks of 3 x 300 m, with 100 meters of walking recovery between each repetition and 10 minutes of recovery between each block.

The main challenge was clear: avoid starting too fast and maintain consistency throughout the session.

The times observed over 300 meters reflected a diversity of levels within the group. The fastest profiles were around 50 seconds, while others were closer to 1 minute 10. This range allowed for overall coherence while respecting individual differences.

Effort Management, Sensations, and Collective Dynamic

As the repetitions progressed, the session became increasingly demanding. The first repetitions served as benchmarks, while the subsequent ones required more mental management and pace control.

This type of format quickly highlights two key elements: the difficulty of not starting too fast and the need to remain consistent despite growing fatigue.

But what particularly stood out in this session was the collective dynamic. Even though each person ran their own race, the group's energy played an important role in motivation and consistency.

Some participants came to encourage those who were running, others stayed near the track to support the last repetitions. This atmosphere created a real cohesion and helped maintain intensity, even in more difficult moments.

The mental management of effort was therefore directly linked to this collective context: being carried by the group often allowed for a more stable and committed pace.

Muscle Preparation and Participant Feedback

Before the session, muscle preparation work was integrated with the use of IZOM Athlétique heating balm, applied to the solicited areas before exertion.

This simple gesture is part of a warm-up routine, providing a progressive feeling of warmth appreciated before intensity.

After the session, several feedback points were collected. Participants reported an overall feeling of muscular comfort during exertion, few felt tensions, and an impression of better preparation before starting.

Some also highlighted an interesting point: the habit of thinking about recovery only after exertion, whereas pre-session preparation also plays an important role in the overall feeling.

A Session Accessible to Different Runner Profiles

This type of session can be useful for several profiles:

  • middle-distance runners in specific preparation
  • 5km and 10km runners
  • sprinters working on speed endurance
  • triathletes looking to structure their effort

The main interest lies in working on regularity, pace management, and the ability to repeat a clean effort despite fatigue.

Conclusion: A Session Simple in Structure, Demanding in Execution

This 9 x 300m session shows that a simple format can become very comprehensive when well constructed.

Beyond speed, it is above all regularity, lucidity, and the ability to manage effort over time that make the difference.

And in this type of session, the collective often plays a key role: it pushes, it supports, and it helps maintain an intensity that one might sometimes struggle to maintain alone.
